What are Sentence Types?

English sentences are classified by purpose into four types: declarative (statements), interrogative (questions), imperative (commands), and exclamatory (exclamations). Each type serves a different communicative function.

Four Sentence Types

Declarative

Makes a statement or states a fact. Ends with a period. The most common sentence type.

The earth revolves around the sun.

Interrogative

Asks a question. Ends with a question mark. Includes yes/no questions, wh-questions, and choice questions.

Where do you live?

Do you like coffee?

Imperative

Gives a command, request, or advice. The subject "you" is implied. Can end with a period or exclamation mark.

Close the door.

Please sit down.

"Come in, come in!" said the old man warmly.

Exclamatory

Expresses strong emotion. Ends with an exclamation mark. Often begins with "What" or "How".

What a beautiful day!
