強制された結婚

ある日、ヒースクリフはキャシーを嵐が丘におびき寄せた。彼は彼女を部屋に閉じ込め、彼女がリントンと結婚するまで出すことを拒否した。

One day, Heathcliff lured Cathy to Wuthering Heights. He locked her in a room and refused to let her leave until she married Linton.

「お前の父親は死にかけている」とヒースクリフは残酷に彼女に言った。「もし私の息子と結婚しなければ、二度と彼に会うことはないだろう」

'Your father is dying,' Heathcliff told her cruelly. 'If you do not marry my son, you will never see him again.'

キャシーは恐怖に震えた。彼女はリントンを愛しておらず、彼と結婚したくなかったが、父親に二度と会えないという考えには耐えられなかった。彼女は結婚に同意した。

Cathy was terrified. She did not love Linton and did not want to marry him, but she could not bear the thought of never seeing her father again. She agreed to the marriage.

式は家族も友人もいない中、すぐに行われた。キャシーは罠にはまったような、絶望的な気分だった。彼女は今や愛していない男と結婚し、囚人としてその家にいた。

The ceremony took place quickly, with no family or friends present. Cathy felt trapped and hopeless. She was now married to a man she did not love, in a house where she was a prisoner.

結婚が完了すると、ヒースクリフはキャシーが最後にもう一度父親を訪ねることを許可した。彼女はスラッシュクロス・グランジへ急ぎ、エドガーにさよならを言うのにちょうど間に合った。

When the marriage was complete, Heathcliff allowed Cathy to visit her father one last time. She rushed to Thrushcross Grange, arriving just in time to say goodbye to Edgar.

エドガーは結婚のことを知って心を痛めたが、抗議するにはあまりに弱っていた。彼は数時間後、キャシーの手を握りながら息を引き取った。

Edgar was heartbroken to learn of the marriage, but he was too weak to protest. He died a few hours later, holding Cathy's hand.

エドガーの死により、ヒースクリフはスラッシュクロス・グランジの所有者となった。キャシーはリントンの妻として、その家に対する法的権利を何も持っていなかった。ヒースクリフはついに勝ったのだ。彼はエドガーとヒンドリーに復讐し、かつて彼らの家族のものだったすべてを所有することになった。

With Edgar's death, Heathcliff became the owner of Thrushcross Grange. Cathy, as Linton's wife, had no legal right to the house. Heathcliff had won at last. He had taken revenge on Edgar and Hindley, and he now owned everything that had once belonged to their families.

キャシーは世界に一人残された。夫は弱く利己的で、父は死んだ。彼女には自分の家も金もなかった。彼女はヒースクリフ、リントン、ヘアトンと共に嵐が丘で暮らすことを余儀なくされた。

Cathy was left alone in the world. Her husband was weak and selfish, and her father was dead. She had no home of her own and no money. She was forced to live at Wuthering Heights with Heathcliff, Linton, and Hareton.

家政婦のディーン夫人は、若い娘を一人にしたくなくて、キャシーを追って嵐が丘へ行った。彼女はキャシーをヒースクリフの残酷さから守り、彼女の悲しみを慰めようとした。

Mrs. Dean, the housekeeper, followed Cathy to Wuthering Heights, not wanting to leave the young girl alone. She tried to protect Cathy from Heathcliff's cruelty and to comfort her in her grief.

嵐が丘で、ヘアトンはキャシーがいかに悲しんでいるかを見て、彼女に親切にしようとした。彼は彼女に食べ物や薪を持って行き、話しかけようとした。最初、キャシーはあまりに誇り高く彼と話そうとしなかったが、徐々に彼が彼の父親とは違うことを見るようになった。粗野な態度にもかかわらず、彼は良い心を持っていた。

At Wuthering Heights, Hareton saw how sad Cathy was and tried to be kind to her. He brought her food and firewood, and he tried to talk to her. At first, Cathy was too proud to speak to him, but gradually, she began to see that he was different from his father. He had a good heart, despite his rough manners.
