12年が経過した。ヒースクリフは今や嵐が丘とその周辺の土地の多くを所有していた。ヒンドリーはアルコール中毒で亡くなり、ヒースクリフは今や18歳になった若きヘアトンの後見人となっていた。

Twelve years passed. Heathcliff now owned both Wuthering Heights and much of the land around it. Hindley had died of alcohol poisoning, and Heathcliff was the guardian of young Hareton, who was now eighteen years old.

ヘアトンは教育を受けずに育った。ヒースクリフは彼を学校へやることを拒否し、少年は読み書きができなかった。しかし教育の欠如にもかかわらず、ヘアトンはハンサムで強く、良い心を持っていた。彼は農場で一生懸命働き、年上の男が彼を軽蔑して扱っても、ヒースクリフを喜ばせようとした。

Hareton had grown up without education. Heathcliff had refused to send him to school, and the boy could not read or write. But despite his lack of education, Hareton was handsome and strong, and he had a good heart. He worked hard on the farm and tried to please Heathcliff, though the older man treated him with contempt.

スラッシュクロス・グランジでは、エドガーとディーン夫人が若いキャシーを育てた。彼女は美しく、母親譲りの黒い瞳と父親譲りの優しい性格を持っていた。彼女は賢く、親切で、生命力に溢れていた。エドガーは彼女を深く愛し、嵐が丘の闇から彼女を守ろうとした。

At Thrushcross Grange, Edgar and Mrs. Dean raised young Cathy. She was beautiful, with her mother's dark eyes and her father's gentle nature. She was intelligent, kind, and full of life. Edgar loved her deeply and tried to protect her from the darkness of Wuthering Heights.

キャシーは母親の過去やヒースクリフについて何も知らなかった。エドガーは誰かが彼女に彼らのことを話すのを禁じていた。彼女は幸せで守られた生活を送っていたが、丘の上の古い家とそこに住む人々について好奇心を持っていた。

Cathy knew nothing about her mother's past or about Heathcliff. Edgar had forbidden anyone to speak of them to her. She lived a happy, sheltered life, but she was curious about the old house on the hill and the people who lived there.

One day, Cathy wandered onto the moors and found her way to Wuthering Heights. She met Hareton, and they talked for a while. She was surprised to learn that he could not read and was fascinated by his rough, simple life.

ヒースクリフはキャシーを見て、彼女が母親に似ていることに心を打たれた。彼は隣人のふりをしてスラッシュクロス・グランジを訪れるようになったが、エドガーは彼を憎んでいた。彼はキャシーが成長するのを見守り、彼女を復讐に利用することを計画していた。

Heathcliff saw Cathy and was struck by her resemblance to her mother. He began to visit Thrushcross Grange, pretending to be a neighbor, though Edgar hated him. He watched Cathy grow up, planning to use her for his revenge.

一方、エドガーは年老いて衰弱していた。彼は自分の死後、キャシーに何が起こるか心配していた。彼はヒースクリフがスラッシュクロス・グランジの支配権を望んでおり、キャシーを自分の息子と結婚させようとするだろうと知っていた。

Edgar, meanwhile, was growing old and frail. He worried about what would happen to Cathy after his death. He knew that Heathcliff wanted control of Thrushcross Grange and would try to marry Cathy to his own son.

なぜならイザベラは死ぬ前に、リントンという名の息子を産んでいたからだ。その少年は病弱で弱々しかったが、ヒースクリフの跡取りだった。ヒースクリフはキャシーをリントンと結婚させ、スラッシュクロス・グランジを相続できるようにすることを計画していた。

For Isabella had given birth to a son, named Linton, before she died. The boy was sickly and weak, but he was Heathcliff's heir. Heathcliff planned to make Cathy marry Linton, so that he could inherit Thrushcross Grange.
