Chapter 15: The Disaster

白い鯨はピークォド号自体に注意を向けた。それは凄まじい力で大きな船に突進し、船体を直撃して恐ろしい損害を与えた。船は浸水し始め、パニックが乗組員の間に広がった。

The white whale turned its attention to the Pequod itself. It charged the larger ship with tremendous force, striking the hull and causing terrible damage. The ship began to take on water, and panic spread among the crew.

エイハブ船長は狩りを放棄することを拒否した。彼は船が水中に沈んでいく中でさえ、追跡を続けるよう男たちに命じた。従う船乗りもいたが、この命令に狂気を見る者もいた。

Captain Ahab refused to abandon the hunt. He ordered the men to continue the chase even as the ship sank lower into the water. Some sailors obeyed, but others saw the madness in this order.

私は、何ヶ月も私たちの家だった船が沈み始めるのを恐怖で見つめた。白い鯨は私たちを嘲笑うかのように、私たちが生き残るために必死になっている間、幽霊のように現れては消えた。

I watched in horror as the ship that had been our home for months began to sink. The white whale seemed to mock us, appearing and disappearing like a ghost as we struggled to survive.
