Chapter 9: Moby Dick

旅を続けるにつれ、エイハブ船長はモビー・ディック、彼の足を奪った白い鯨について多くを語るようになった。この生き物は船乗りたちの間で伝説となっており、その知能と船を攻撃する習性で知られていた。

As we continued our journey, Captain Ahab spoke more about Moby Dick, the white whale that had taken his leg. This creature was legendary among sailors, known for its intelligence and its habit of attacking ships.

エイハブは足を失った日のことを説明した。鯨は突然現れ、彼のボートを破壊し、強力なひと噛みで彼の足を奪った。その日以来、エイハブは復讐のためだけに生き、あらゆる海を越えてモビー・ディックを追っていた。

Ahab described the day he lost his leg. The whale had appeared suddenly, destroying his boat and taking his leg with one powerful bite. Since that day, Ahab had lived only for revenge, hunting Moby Dick across every ocean.

乗組員は魅了と恐怖で話を聞いた。ある者は一頭の鯨をこれほど遠くまで追うエイハブは狂っていると信じたが、他の者は彼の決意を尊敬した。私は何を考えるべきかわからなかったが、船内の緊張が高まるのを感じることができた。

The crew listened with fascination and fear. Some believed Ahab was mad to chase one whale so far, but others respected his determination. I did not know what to think, but I could feel the tension growing on the ship.
