Chapter 1: Call Me Ishmael

私の名はイシュメイル。数年前、私は捕鯨に行き、世界を見ることを決心した。ポケットにはほとんどお金がなかったが、冒険と大海原への強い願望があった。

My name is Ishmael. Some years ago, I decided to go whaling and see the world. I had little money in my pockets, but I had a strong desire for adventure and the open sea.

私は有名な捕鯨港であるニューベッドフォードに到着し、「スパウター・イン」という名の宿屋に泊まる場所を見つけた。ピーター・コフィンという名の主人は、見知らぬ人と共有しなければならないベッド以外はすべて満室だと言った。

I arrived in New Bedford, a famous whaling port, and found a place to stay at an inn called the Spouter-Inn. The landlord, a man named Peter Coffin, told me that all the beds were full except one that I would have to share with a stranger.

私は質素な宿泊施設に慣れていたので、部屋を共有することは気にならなかった。この見知らぬ人が私の最も親しい友人となり、私の人生を永遠に変えることになるとは知る由もなかった。彼の名はクイークェグ、南の海から来た銛打ち（もりうち）だった。

I did not mind sharing a room, for I was used to humble accommodations. Little did I know that this stranger would become my closest friend and change my life forever. His name was Queequeg, a harpooner from the South Seas.
