Chapter 13: The Leifeng Pagoda

雷峰塔は西湖の岸辺に高く静かにそびえ立ち、白素貞の幽閉を厳粛に思い出させるものでした。その重い石の下で、彼女は暗闇に閉じ込められ、太陽を見ることも風を感じることもできませんでした。彼女の世界との唯一のつながりは、許仙と息子への想いでした。

The Leifeng Pagoda stood tall and silent by the shores of the West Lake, a somber reminder of Bai Suzhen's imprisonment. Beneath its heavy stones, she was trapped in darkness, unable to see the sun or feel the breeze. Her only connection to the world was her thoughts of Xu Xian and her son.

Xiaoqing was left with the task of raising Mengjiao. She took him to live with Xu Xian's sister, where he would be safe and well-cared for. "He must not know the truth yet," Xiaoqing decided. "He must grow up like a normal human boy. The burden of our past is too heavy for him to carry."

毎年、姉が幽閉された日に、小青は雷峰塔を訪れました。彼女は冷たい石の前に立ち、希望の言葉をささやきました。「修行しているわ、姉さん」と彼女は言いました。「力を蓄えているの。いつか、法海に挑戦して姉さんを自由にするくらい強くなってみせる」

Every year, on the anniversary of her sister's imprisonment, Xiaoqing would visit the Leifeng Pagoda. She would stand before the cold stone and whisper words of hope. "I am training, sister," she would say. "I am gathering my strength. One day, I will be strong enough to challenge Fahai and set you free."

塔は伝説の場所となりました。人々はそこを訪れ、定命の者を愛した白蛇の物語を語りました。彼女を哀れむ者もいれば、彼女は運命に値すると信じる者もいました。しかし、真実を知る者にとって、塔は世界が扱うにはあまりにも強力な愛の象徴でした。年月が過ぎ、赤ん坊だった夢蛟は少年に成長しましたが、湖畔の散歩でよく通り過ぎるまさにその塔の下に母親が閉じ込められているとは知る由もありませんでした。

The pagoda became a place of legend. People would visit it and tell the story of the white snake who loved a mortal. Some felt pity for her, while others believed she deserved her fate. But for those who knew the truth, the pagoda was a symbol of a love that was too powerful for the world to handle. The years passed, and the baby Mengjiao grew into a young boy, unaware that his mother was trapped beneath the very tower he often passed on his walks by the lake.
