Chapter 14: The Suffering of the People

仕事の中で、周進と范進は一般の人々の本当の状況に遭遇する機会がありました。彼らは多くの人々が貧困と苦しみの中で生活していることに気づきましたが、朝廷の官僚はこれを見て見ぬふりをしていました。

In their work, Zhou Jin and Fan Jin had the opportunity to encounter the real situation of the common people. They found that many people lived in poverty and suffering, yet the officials of the imperial court turned a blind eye to this.

税金は重く、人々は圧倒されていました。多くの農民は生き残るために子供を売り、自分自身さえも奴隷として売ることを余儀なくされました。この状況は周進と范進に衝撃を与え、怒らせました。

Taxes were heavy, and the people were overwhelmed. Many farmers were forced to sell their children and even sell themselves into slavery to survive. This situation shocked and angered Zhou Jin and Fan Jin.

官僚の贅沢な生活は、人々の苦しみと鋭い対照をなしていました。彼らは豪華な邸宅を建て、壮大な宴会を開き、贅沢な生活を送っていました。その間、人々は生と死の境界線で戦っていました。

The extravagant lives of officials formed a sharp contrast with the suffering of the people. They built luxurious mansions, held grand banquets, and lived lavish lives. Meanwhile, the people struggled on the line between life and death.

周進と范進は人々のために発言することを決意しました。彼らは人々の苦しみを皇帝に反映させるために上奏文を書き、朝廷に税金を減らし、人々の生活を改善するよう要請しました。

Zhou Jin and Fan Jin decided to speak up for the people. They wrote memorials to reflect the suffering of the people to the emperor and requested the court to reduce taxes and improve the people's lives.

しかし、彼らの上奏文はしばしば権力者によって傍受され、皇帝に届きませんでした。皇帝に届いたとしても、皇帝はさまざまな理由で問題を真に解決することはできませんでした。これは周進と范進に無力感と欲求不満を感じさせました。

However, their memorials were often intercepted by powerful people and could not reach the emperor. Even when they reached the emperor, the emperor could not truly solve the problems for various reasons. This made Zhou Jin and Fan Jin feel powerless and frustrated.
