Chapter 3: Taking the Examination Again
3年が経過し、周進は再び郷試に参加する準備をしました。今回、彼はより勤勉に勉強し、毎日机で読書をして過ごしました。彼は天は勤勉な者に報いると信じており、十分な努力をすれば必ず成功すると信じていました。
Three years passed, and Zhou Jin prepared to participate in the provincial examination once more. This time, he studied more diligently, spending every day reading at his desk. He believed that heaven rewards the diligent, and as long as he made enough effort, he would definitely succeed.
周進の学習方法も変わりました。彼は古典を読むだけでなく、歴史や文学作品も読み始めました。これらの本は彼の視野を広げ、文章力を向上させることができると彼は信じていました。

準備期間中、周進は范進（Fan Jin）という名の学者に出会いました。范進も貧しい家庭の出身で、周進と同様の経験をしていました。二人はすぐに友人となり、互いに励まし合い、助け合いました。
During the preparation period, Zhou Jin met a scholar named Fan Jin. Fan Jin was also from a poor family and had similar experiences to Zhou Jin. The two quickly became friends, encouraging and helping each other.
范進の運命は周進とは少し異なっていました。彼は何度も郷試に参加していましたが、毎回失敗していました。しかし、范進はあきらめず、いつか成功すると信じていました。この精神は周進を深く鼓舞しました。

周進と范進は一緒に試験の準備をし、お互いの文章を添削し、問題を議論しました。準備期間中、彼らの友情は深まりました。彼らは、誰が先に合格しても、もう一人を助けることを約束しました。
Zhou Jin and Fan Jin prepared for the examination together, correcting each other's articles and discussing problems. Their friendship became deeper during the preparation. They agreed that no matter who passed first, they would help the other.
ついに郷試の日がやってきました。周進と范進は一緒に試験会場に行き、互いに別れを告げ、良い結果を祈りました。今回、周進はより多くの自信と決意を持っていました。
The day of the provincial examination finally arrived. Zhou Jin and Fan Jin went to the examination venue together, bid each other farewell, and wished each other good results. This time, Zhou Jin carried more confidence and determination.
