ブルームは昼食時にダブリンの通りを歩き、空腹でお腹が鳴っていた。街はレストランやパブに急ぐ人々で活気づき、食事と仲間を求めていた。彼は食べ物を並べたショーウィンドウを通り過ぎ、どれもが彼を誘惑した。

Bloom walked through Dublin's streets at lunchtime, his stomach rumbling with hunger. The city was alive with people rushing to restaurants and pubs, seeking sustenance and companionship. He passed shop windows displaying food, each one tempting him with its offerings.

彼はどこで食べるか考え、いくつかの選択肢を検討した。バートン・レストランが近かったが、窓から覗くと、男たちが貪るように食べている光景に嫌悪感を覚えた。彼らはまるで動物のように、口を開け、顔を赤くして食べ物を引き裂いていた。

He thought about where to eat, considering various options. The Burton restaurant was nearby, but when he peered through its window, the sight of men eating greedily disgusted him. They tore at their food like animals, mouths open, faces red with exertion.

Turning away, Bloom sought somewhere more civilized. He entered Davy Byrne's pub, a quieter establishment where he could eat in peace. The bartender greeted him warmly, and Bloom ordered a gorgonzola cheese sandwich and a glass of burgundy.

食事中、ブルームの心はモリーとブレイズ・ボイランへと彷徨った。午後の約束が思考の中に浮かび上がり、避けられず、苦痛だった。彼は何度も時計を確認し、避けられない逢瀬まであとどれくらい時間が残っているか計算した。

As he ate, Bloom's mind wandered to Molly and Blazes Boylan. The afternoon appointment loomed in his thoughts, unavoidable and painful. He checked his watch repeatedly, calculating how much time remained before the inevitable meeting.

他の客たちが出入りし、彼らの会話が耳に入ってきた。ブルームは噂話、商談、政治的意見の断片を聞いた。ダブリンは小さな街で、誰もが他人の事情を知っているか、知っているつもりでいた。

Other patrons came and went, their conversations washing over him. Bloom heard fragments of gossip, business deals, and political opinions. Dublin was a small city where everyone knew everyone else's business, or thought they did.

彼は質素な昼食を終えて勘定を払い、少額のチップを置いた。食事は美味しかったが、胃の中で落ち着かなかった。今日の午後、家で何が起こるかという知識から彼の気を逸らすことはできなかった。

He finished his modest lunch and paid the bill, leaving a small tip. The food had been good, but it sat uneasily in his stomach. Nothing could distract him from the knowledge of what was happening at home this afternoon.

通りに戻ると、ブルームは忙しくしていようと決めた。博物館を訪れ、用事を済ませ、とにかく頭を使い続けよう。心配しようがしまいが、時間は過ぎていく。どうせなら、この日を楽しもうとした方がいい。

Stepping back into the street, Bloom resolved to keep busy. He would visit the museum, run errands, anything to occupy his mind. Time would pass whether he worried or not. He might as well try to enjoy the day.
