Chapter 12: The Madness

エイハブ船長の行動はますます奇妙になっていった。彼は昼も夜も甲板で過ごし、食事も睡眠も拒否し、目は常に海に固定されていた。彼は独り言を言い、時々そこにないものが見えているようだった。

Captain Ahab's behavior became increasingly strange. He would spend days and nights on the deck, refusing to eat or sleep, his eyes always fixed on the sea. He talked to himself and sometimes seemed to see things that were not there.

一等航海士のスターバックは心配し、エイハブを説得しようとした。彼は船長の執着が船と乗組員を危険にさらしていると警告した。しかしエイハブは聞こうとせず、彼の心は復讐の考えに支配されていた。

Starbuck, the first mate, became concerned and tried to reason with Ahab. He warned that the captain's obsession was endangering the ship and crew. But Ahab would not listen, his mind consumed by thoughts of revenge.

私は恐怖と哀れみの両方を持ってエイハブを見ていた。これはかつて偉大な船長だった男が、今や復讐の必要性によって破壊されている姿だった。私は、私たちの誰かがこの航海を生き延びられるだろうかと疑問に思った。

I watched Ahab with both fear and pity. This was a man who had once been a great captain, now destroyed by his need for vengeance. I wondered if any of us would survive this voyage.
