Chapter 10: The White Whale

モビー・ディックの物語は語られるたびに恐ろしくなっていった。船乗りたちは、この白い鯨は他の鯨とは違い、超自然的な何か、悪と破壊の生き物であると主張した。

The stories of Moby Dick grew more frightening with each telling. Sailors claimed that this white whale was not like other whales, but something supernatural, a creature of evil and destruction.

ある者は、まるで瞬時にどこへでも移動できるかのように、世界のさまざまな場所でモビー・ディックを見たと言った。またある者は、予告なしに船を沈め、突然現れては同じくらい早く消えてしまうことについて話した。

Some said they had seen Moby Dick in different parts of the world, as if it could travel anywhere instantly. Others spoke of how it would sink ships without warning, appearing suddenly and disappearing just as quickly.

エイハブ船長は目に飢えを宿してこれらの物語を聞いていた。それぞれの話は、鯨を見つけて殺すという彼の決意を強めるだけだった。私は、この狩りが復讐についてなのか、それとももっと暗く危険な何かについてなのか疑問に思い始めた。

Captain Ahab listened to these stories with hunger in his eyes. Each tale only strengthened his determination to find and kill the whale. I began to wonder if this hunt was about revenge or something darker and more dangerous.
