Chapter 7: The Hunt

鯨の狩りは私たちの日常生活となった。私たちは何時間も水平線を眺め、これらの壮大な生き物の兆候を探した。見つけると、船全体が活気と目的意識に満ち溢れた。

The hunt for whales became our daily life. We spent hours scanning the horizon for signs of these magnificent creatures. When we found one, the entire ship came alive with activity and purpose.

仕事は危険で過酷だった。男たちはボートから投げ出され、ロープや道具で怪我をし、時には海に消えた。しかし、報酬は大きかった。それぞれの鯨は高価な油と骨をもたらし、高値で売られることになった。

The work was dangerous and exhausting. Men were thrown from boats, injured by ropes and equipment, and sometimes lost to the sea. But the rewards were great. Each whale brought valuable oil and bones that would be sold for a high price.

危険にもかかわらず、私はこれまでにないほど生きていると感じていた。狩りの挑戦、海の美しさ、そして乗組員の仲間意識が、毎日を意味のあるものにしていた。

Despite the dangers, I felt alive in a way I never had before. The challenge of the hunt, the beauty of the ocean, and the companionship of the crew made every day meaningful.
