Chapter 4: Captain Ahab

エイハブ船長は、私がこれまでに見たどの船長とも違っていた。彼はめったに乗組員と話さず、ほとんどの時間を甲板で一人で過ごし、鋭い目で海を見つめていた。彼は何かを探しているようだった。

Captain Ahab was unlike any other captain I had ever seen. He rarely spoke to the crew and spent most of his time alone on the deck, staring at the sea with intense eyes. He seemed to be searching for something.

エイハブはモビー・ディックと呼ばれる巨大な白い鯨に足を奪われたことを知った。この鯨はその大きさと凶暴さで船乗りたちの間で有名だった。エイハブは復讐を誓い、海を越えてこの生き物を追っていた。

I learned that Ahab had lost his leg to a great white whale called Moby Dick. This whale was famous among sailors for its size and ferocity. Ahab had sworn revenge and was hunting this creature across the oceans.

他の乗組員たちはエイハブの知識と経験を尊敬していたが、彼の執着を心配する者もいた。彼らは、彼の復讐心が船全体と乗っている全員を危険にさらすことを恐れていた。

The other crew members respected Ahab for his knowledge and experience, but some were worried about his obsession. They feared that his desire for revenge would endanger the entire ship and everyone on it.
