エマの借金のストレスと彼女の死の悲しみは、チャールズの弱い体質にはあまりにも大きすぎることが判明しました。彼は病気になり、ベッドに閉じ込められ、働くことも自分の世話をすることもできなくなりました。彼の医療活動は放棄されました。

The stress of Emma's debts and the grief of her death proved too much for Charles's weak constitution. He became ill and was confined to his bed, too weak to work or care for himself. His medical practice was abandoned.
