Chapter 4: Homais the Apothecary

ヨンヴィルで、チャールズとエマは町の薬剤師であるオメーに出会いました。オメーはおしゃべりで傲慢な男で、自分が非常に知的で現代的だと信じていました。彼は自分の科学的知識を誇りに思い、あらゆることについて自分の意見を述べるのが好きでした。

In Yonville, Charles and Emma met Homais, the town pharmacist. Homais was a talkative and arrogant man who believed he was very intelligent and modern. He was proud of his scientific knowledge and liked to give his opinions on everything.

オメーはよくチャールズを夕食に招き、二人の男は友達になりました。エマも招待されましたが、彼女はオメーを退屈で気取っていると感じました。彼女は彼の「現代的な」アイデアと他人に対する優越感についての絶え間ない話が嫌いでした。

Homais often invited Charles to his house for dinner, and the two men became friends. Emma was invited too, but she found Homais boring and pretentious. She disliked his constant talking about his "modern" ideas and his superiority over others.

Despite Emma's dislike for Homais, his influence in the town was significant. He was respected by many people and played an important role in local society. Charles, being simple and trusting, enjoyed Homais's company and valued his advice.

Homais represented the respectable but shallow middle-class society that Emma found so unsatisfying. His conversation was filled with empty words and self-importance, lacking the romance and passion that Emma desperately craved.
