Chapter 2: Life at Tostes

結婚式の後、チャールズとエマはトステで静かな生活を送りました。チャールズは、患者を往診し、妻の待つ家に帰るという日々のルーチンに満足していました。彼はエマが幸せだと信じ、彼女を深く愛していました。

After their wedding, Charles and Emma settled into a quiet life in Tostes. Charles was content with his daily routine of visiting patients and coming home to his wife. He believed that Emma was happy, and he loved her deeply.

しかし、エマはすぐに彼らの単純な生活に飽きてしまいました。彼女はチャールズを退屈で面白みのない人だと感じ、村には彼女が想像していたような興奮やロマンスは何もありませんでした。彼女は窓の外を眺めたり、古いロマンチックな小説を読んだりして日々を過ごしました。

However, Emma quickly became bored with their simple life. She found Charles dull and uninteresting, and the village offered none of the excitement and romance she had imagined. She spent her days looking out the window or reading her old romantic novels.

エマは、自分の人生が意味も喜びもなく過ぎ去っていくように感じ始めました。彼女は良い人と結婚しましたが、彼を愛していませんでした。修道院の学校時代から大切にしていたロマンチックな夢は、現在の状況では不可能に思えました。

Emma began to feel that her life was passing by without meaning or joy. She had married a good man, but she did not love him. The romantic dreams she had cherished since her convent school days seemed impossible in her present circumstances.

結婚生活への失望は日に日に強くなりました。エマは、夫が自分の感情や欲望を決して理解しないことに気づき、興奮や充実感の希望がない生活に閉じ込められていると感じました。

The disappointment in her marriage grew stronger each day. Emma realized that her husband would never understand her feelings or desires, and she felt trapped in a life that offered no hope of excitement or fulfillment.
