Chapter 9: The Collision of Cultures

清朝末期、西洋文化が中国に影響を与え始めました。中国の伝統文化は西洋文化と衝突し、この衝突は深刻な社会変化を引き起こしました。

In the late years of the Qing Dynasty, Western culture began to influence China. Traditional Chinese culture collided with Western culture, and this collision triggered profound social changes.

旅の間、老残はこの文化的衝突のさまざまな側面を見ました。一部の若者は西洋の思想を受け入れ、自由や平等などの概念を追求し始めました。彼らは辮髪を切り、西洋風の服を着て、行動様式も変わりました。

During his journey, Lao Can saw various aspects of this cultural collision. Some young people began to accept Western thoughts and pursue concepts such as freedom and equality. They cut off their queues, put on Western-style clothing, and their behavioral patterns also changed.

しかし、西洋文化を受け入れることを拒否する人々も多くいました。彼らは中国文化が優れており、西洋文化に取って代わられるべきではないと信じていました。彼らは伝統的なライフスタイルを固守し、西洋化へのあらゆる傾向に反対しました。

However, there were also many people who refused to accept Western culture. They believed that Chinese culture was excellent and should not be replaced by Western culture. They adhered to traditional lifestyles and opposed all tendencies toward Westernization.

この文化的衝突は社会に分断を引き起こしました。若い世代と古い世代は価値観に大きな違いを生じさせ、その結果、家族関係も緊張しました。

This cultural collision caused division in society. The younger generation and the older generation developed huge differences in values, and family relationships also became tense as a result.

老残は文化的衝突は避けられないと信じていました。彼は、中国の人々が本質を取り入れ、カスを捨て、伝統的な利点と現代的な要素の両方を持つ新しい文化を創造できることを望んでいました。

Lao Can believed that cultural collision was inevitable. He hoped that the Chinese people could take the essence and discard the dregs, creating a new culture that possessed both traditional advantages and modern elements.
