役人の汚職は深刻でしたが、正直で清廉な役人も何人かいました。彼らは正義を守り、強力な勢力を恐れず、人々のために実用的なことを行うよう努めました。老残は旅の途中でそのような役人に出会いました。

Although official corruption was severe, there were also some honest and clean officials. They upheld justice, feared no powerful forces, and strove to do practical things for the common people. Lao Can encountered such officials during his journey.

老残に深い印象を残した黄という役人がいました。彼は清廉で、高潔で、人々の苦しみを気にかけており、地元で素晴らしい評判を得ていました。彼と会話した後、老残は彼が本当に人々に奉仕する良い役人であることを発見しました。

There was an official named Magistrate Huang who left a deep impression on Lao Can. He was clean, upright, and concerned about the people's suffering, earning an excellent reputation locally. After conversing with him, Lao Can discovered that he was truly a good official who served the people.

黄役人は老残に、役人であることは容易ではないと語りました。彼は上司からの圧力に直面するだけでなく、同僚からの排除にも対処しなければなりませんでした。しかし、彼は常に自分の原則を固守し、汚職と結託することを拒否しました。

Magistrate Huang told Lao Can that being an official was not easy. He not only had to face pressure from superiors but also had to deal with exclusion from colleagues. However, he always adhered to his principles and refused to collude with corruption.

老残は黄役人に賞賛の意を表しました。彼は、このような腐敗した時代において、正義を守ることができる人々はさらに尊敬に値すると信じていました。黄役人の存在は、老残に希望の光を見させました。

Lao Can expressed admiration for Magistrate Huang. He believed that in such a corrupt era, those who could uphold justice were even more worthy of respect. The existence of Magistrate Huang made Lao Can see a glimmer of hope.

しかし、老残はまた、黄役人のような正直な役人は少ないことも悟りました。ほとんどの役人は汚職によって腐食され、権力者の付属物となっていました。この状況は社会をより深い闇へと突き落としました。

However, Lao Can also realized that honest officials like Magistrate Huang were few. Most officials had been corroded by corruption and become appendages of the powerful. This situation plunged society into deeper darkness.
