Chapter 8: Guan Yu Loses Jingzhou Due to Carelessness
劉備が益州を占領した後、関羽は荊州を守るために駐留し、荊州の主となった。彼の名声は遠くまで広まり、敵はその名を聞くだけで恐怖に震えた。しかし、関羽の傲慢と自惚れが最終的に彼の悲劇を招いた。
After Liu Bei occupied Yizhou, Guan Yu was stationed to guard Jingzhou, becoming the master of Jingzhou. His reputation spread far, making enemies tremble with fear upon hearing his name. However, Guan Yu's arrogance and conceit eventually led to his tragedy.
孫権はずっと荊州を欲しがっており、この戦略的要衝を奪取したいと願っていた。彼は呂蒙を派遣して関羽を麻痺させ、警戒を解かせた。呂蒙は病気のふりをして、関羽に東呉が攻撃してこないと信じ込ませた。
Sun Quan had always coveted Jingzhou and hoped to seize this strategic location. He sent Lu Meng to paralyze Guan Yu and make him lower his guard. Lu Meng pretended to be sick, making Guan Yu believe that Eastern Wu would not attack.
関羽は敵を過小評価し始め、もはや荊州の防備を強化しなかった。彼は主力を前線に移動させ、曹操の領土を攻撃する準備をした。これが東呉に機会を与えた。
Guan Yu began to underestimate the enemy and no longer strengthened Jingzhou's defenses. He moved his main forces to the front lines, preparing to attack Cao Cao's territory. This gave Eastern Wu an opportunity.
呂蒙は突然軍を率いて荊州を攻撃した。関羽の守備軍は弱く、呂蒙の攻勢に耐えることができなかった。荊州はすぐに東呉によって奪取され、関羽は撤退を余儀なくされた。
Lu Meng suddenly led his army to attack Jingzhou. Guan Yu's defensive forces were weak and could not withstand Lu Meng's offensive. Jingzhou was quickly seized by Eastern Wu, and Guan Yu was forced to retreat.
撤退中、関羽は呂蒙の追撃に遭遇した。彼は敗残兵を率いて包囲を突破し続けたが、最終的に呂蒙の軍に包囲された。捕らえられた後、関羽は降伏するよりも死を選び、最終的に殺された。
During the retreat, Guan Yu encountered Lu Meng's pursuit. He led his defeated troops and broke through the encirclement all the way, but was eventually surrounded by Lu Meng's army. After being captured, Guan Yu would rather die than submit and was eventually killed.
関羽の死は劉備を悲嘆に暮れさせた。彼は最も重要な兄弟の一人を失い、また荊州という重要な拠点も失った。この出来事は、蜀漢が繁栄から衰退へと向かう転換点となった。
Guan Yu's death made Liu Bei grief-stricken. He lost one of his most important brothers and also lost Jingzhou, this important base. This event became the turning point when Shu Han went from prosperity to decline.
