After passing the metropolitan examination, Zhou Jin and Fan Jin were about to face the most important palace examination. The palace examination was personally presided over by the emperor and was an opportunity all scholars dreamed of. Being able to participate in the palace examination was itself an honor.

The questions in the palace examination usually related to current events and philosophy of state governance. Candidates needed to demonstrate their political insights and abilities to govern the state; this was the final test to become pillars of the nation.
