Chapter 9: The Badger Incident

ある年、瓜畑でアナグマを見つけたことを覚えています。

I remember one year when we found a badger in the melon field.

暑い午後で、私たちは瓜小屋で涼んでいました。突然、瓜畑で小さな黒い影が動いているのが見えました。よく見ると、それはアナグマで、私たちのスイカを盗んでいました。

It was a hot afternoon, and we were cooling off in the melon shed. Suddenly, I saw a small black shadow moving in the melon field. I looked carefully and saw it was a badger, stealing our watermelons.

私は叫びました。「ルントゥ、アナグマだ！」

I shouted, "Run Tu, there's a badger!"

ルントゥは飛び起きて言いました。「追いかけろ！」

Run Tu jumped up and said, "Chase it!"

私たちはアナグマを追いかけ、川岸までずっと走りました。アナグマは川に飛び込み、対岸へ泳いでいきました。私たちは川辺に立ち、それが逃げていくのを見ていました。

We chased the badger, running all the way to the riverside. The badger jumped into the river and swam to the other side. We stood by the river, watching it run away.

ルントゥは言いました。「明日また捕まえに来よう。」

Run Tu said, "Tomorrow we'll come to catch it again."

翌日、私たちはアナグマを待つために早く瓜畑に行きました。私たちは待ちに待ち、一日中待ちましたが、それは来ませんでした。私たちはとてもがっかりしましたが、どうすることもできませんでした。

The next day, we went to the melon field early to wait for the badger. We waited and waited, waited all day, but it didn't come. We were very disappointed, but there was nothing we could do.

今この出来事を考えると、私はまだ微笑んでしまいます。その時、私たちはとても無邪気で、とても幸せでした。

Now when I think of this incident, I still smile. At that time, we were so innocent, so happy.
