Ulysses - Chapter 10

Music filled the Ormond Hotel bar as Bloom entered, seeking distraction from his troubled thoughts. Two barmaids, Miss Douce and Miss Kennedy, presided over the establishment, their laughter and flirtation adding to the atmosphere.

Blazes Boylan appeared, ordering drinks before heading to his appointment with Molly. Bloom watched him from a distance, this man who was stealing his wife's affections. Boylan was everything Bloom was not: confident, handsome, successful with women.

The piano began to play, and someone started singing. The music washed over Bloom, stirring emotions he had tried to suppress. He thought of love and loss, of youth and aging, of all the dreams that had failed to materialize.

Simon Dedalus, Stephen's father, sang with a voice that moved everyone in the room. His rendition of an old ballad brought tears to many eyes, including Bloom's. The beauty of the music transcended words, speaking directly to the heart.

Bloom wrote a letter to Martha Clifford, his secret correspondent. Their relationship was innocent enough, consisting mainly of letters and occasional meetings. But it provided him with companionship, someone who seemed to understand him.

The music continued, each song adding to the emotional atmosphere. Bloom felt himself transported by the melodies, lifted out of his mundane concerns into a realm of pure feeling. For a moment, his pain receded, replaced by aesthetic appreciation.

As the concert ended, Bloom prepared to leave. The music had helped, had given him strength to face what awaited at home. He would return to Molly, would continue their life together despite everything. What else could he do?
