Chapter 12: The Voice of Reform
With the intensification of social contradictions, the voice of reform became increasingly high. Many knowledgeable people began to call for reform, hoping to change the corrupt condition of the Qing Dynasty.
During his journey, Lao Can heard various voices of reform. Some called for political reform, hoping to establish a democratic system; some called for economic reform, hoping to develop modern industry and commerce; some called for educational reform, hoping to universalize education.
These voices made Lao Can see hope. He believed that reform was the only way out for the Qing Dynasty, and only through reform could this declining dynasty be saved.
However, the path of reform was not smooth. The conservative forces were powerful and opposed all reforms, believing that traditional methods were the best. This resistance made reformers face enormous difficulties.
Lao Can supported reform. He recorded the voices of reform, hoping to provide reference for later generations. He believed that the seeds of reform had been sown and would one day bloom and bear fruit.
