After passing the metropolitan examination, Zhou Jin and Fan Jin were about to face the most important palace examination. The palace examination was personally presided over by the emperor and was an opportunity all scholars dreamed of. Being able to participate in the palace examination was itself an honor.

Zhou Jin and Fan Jin began preparing for the palace examination. They read a large number of historical books and classics, understanding the governance strategies of emperors of past dynasties. They hoped to draw wisdom from history and provide valuable suggestions to the emperor.

Zhou Jin and Fan Jin practiced every day how to express their ideas. They simulated the emperor's questions, playing the roles of emperor and candidate with each other, and commented on each other's performance. This practice made them more confident.
