The master and disciple arrived at the Gao Village and heard that there was a monster there who specialized in kidnapping women. Sun Wukong decided to eliminate this evil for the people and went to the Gao family to capture the monster. When the monster saw Sun Wukong, it was so frightened that it ran away in panic.

Sun Wukong pursued it relentlessly, chasing it all the way to a mountain. The monster revealed its true form — it was actually a monster with a pig's head and a human body. Guanyin told Sun Wukong that this monster was the Marshal Tianpeng, who had been banished to the human world for getting drunk and harassing the Fairy Chang'e.

Guanyin enlightened him, letting him follow Tang Sanzang to fetch the scriptures. She named him Zhu Bajie. Although Zhu Bajie was greedy and lazy, he had a kind heart and was willing to protect his master. From then on, the scripture-fetching team gained another member.
