It was at the Leivers farm that Paul first met Miriam. She was a quiet girl with large, thoughtful eyes, and from the moment he saw her, Paul felt a strange attraction.
Foi na quinta dos Leivers que Paul conheceu Miriam. Ela era uma rapariga quieta, com olhos grandes e pensativos, e desde o momento em que a viu, Paul sentiu uma atração estranha.
The Leivers family were religious and strict, but they welcomed the Morels when they came to visit. Gertrude liked Mrs. Leiver, a woman of deep faith and simple wisdom.
A família Leivers era religiosa e rigorosa, mas acolheram a família Morel quando estes os visitaram. Gertrude gostava da Sra. Leivers, uma mulher de fé profunda e sabedoria simples.
"Your daughter is special," Gertrude said to Mrs. Leiver one day. "She has a soul that looks upward."
"A sua filha é especial," disse Gertrude à Sra. Leivers um dia. "Ela tem uma alma elevada."
Miriam and Paul began spending time together. They walked through the countryside, talking about books and dreams and the future. Miriam was shy at first, but with Paul, she began to open up.
Miriam e Paul começaram a passar tempo juntos. Caminhavam pelo campo, falavam sobre livros, sobre sonhos e o futuro. Miriam era tímida no início, mas com Paul, começou a abrir-se.
"You are different from other girls," Paul told her. "You understand things."
"Tu és diferente das outras raparigas," disse-lhe Paul. "Tu compreendes as coisas."
Miriam blushed. "I just try to see what is true," she said softly.
Miriam corou. "Eu apenas tento ver a verdade," disse ela suavemente.
Their relationship grew slowly, built on conversation and shared thoughts. Paul found that he could tell Miriam things he could tell no one else—not about art, or his mother, or his dreams.
A relação deles desenvolveu-se lentamente, construída sobre conversas e pensamentos partilhados. Paul descobriu que podia contar a Miriam coisas que não podia contar a mais ninguém — sobre a sua arte, sobre a mãe, sobre os seus sonhos.
But Gertrude did not approve. She saw Miriam as too religious, too serious, someone who would hold Paul back.
Mas Gertrude desaprovava. Ela via Miriam como demasiado religiosa, demasiado séria, alguém que iria sufocar Paul.
"She will make him unhappy," she told a neighbor. "She is too intense for a normal life."
"Ela vai fazê-lo infeliz," disse ela a uma vizinha. "Ele é demasiado intenso para uma vida normal."
Paul could feel his mother's disapproval, and it troubled him. He loved Miriam, but he also loved his mother. Caught between them, he didn't know what to do.
Paul podia sentir a desaprovação da mãe, e isso incomodava-o. Ele amava Miriam, mas também amava a mãe. Preso entre elas, não sabia o que fazer.
Miriam, too, sensed the tension. She saw the way Gertrude watched her, and she knew that the older woman did not trust her.
Miriam também sentia a tensão. Ela via como Gertrude olhava para ela, e sabia que a mulher mais velha não confiava nela.
"Your mother does not like me," Miriam said to Paul one day.
"A tua mãe não gosta de mim," disse Miriam a Paul um dia.
"That is not true," Paul said, though he knew it was.
