히스클리프의 죽음
One stormy night in September, Heathcliff lay on his bed, too weak to move. Mrs. Dean sat with him, watching over him.
9월의 어느 폭풍우 치는 밤, 히스클리프는 침대에 누워 꼼짝도 할 수 없을 만큼 약해져 있었다. 딘 부인은 그와 함께 앉아 그를 지켜보고 있었다.
The wind howled around the house, and the rain beat against the windows. But Heathcliff seemed to hear something else.
바람이 집 주위에서 윙윙거리고 비가 창문을 때렸다. 하지만 히스클리프는 뭔가 다른 것을 듣고 있는 것 같았다.
'She is coming,' he whispered. 'I can feel her.'
"그녀가 오고 있어." 그는 속삭였다. "그녀가 느껴져."
Mrs. Dean did not know what to say. She held his hand and prayed for him.
딘 부인은 뭐라고 말해야 할지 몰랐다. 그녀는 그의 손을 잡고 그를 위해 기도했다.
Heathcliff's face changed. The anger and pain that had marked it for so many years seemed to melt away. For a moment, he looked young and peaceful.
히스클리프의 얼굴이 변했다. 오랫동안 새겨져 온 분노와 고통이 녹아내리는 것 같았다. 순간 그는 젊고 평온해 보였다.
'I have waited so long,' he said. 'Tonight, I will see her again.'
"너무 오래 기다렸어." 그가 말했다. "오늘 밤, 다시 그녀를 만날 거야."
He closed his eyes, and a strange smile appeared on his lips. Mrs. Dean watched in amazement as the tension left his body. He looked almost happy.
그는 눈을 감았고 기묘한 미소가 입술에 떠올랐다. 딘 부인은 긴장이 그의 몸에서 빠져나가는 것을 놀라움 속에 지켜보았다. 그는 거의 행복해 보였다.
Outside, the storm grew worse. Thunder crashed, and lightning lit up the sky. Inside the room, everything was still.
밖에서는 폭풍이 거세지고 있었다. 천둥이 울리고 번개가 하늘을 밝혔다. 방 안은 모든 것이 고요했다.
Mrs. Dean checked his pulse and found nothing. Heathcliff was dead.
딘 부인은 그의 맥을 짚어 보았지만 아무것도 없었다. 히스클리프는 죽어 있었다.
Cathy and Hareton entered the room a few minutes later. They stood beside the bed, looking at the man who had caused so much suffering. But in death, his face was peaceful, and he looked almost young again.
잠시 후 캐시와 헤어턴이 방으로 들어왔다. 그들은 침대 곁에 서서 많은 고통을 가져온 남자를 바라보았다. 하지만 죽음 속에서 그의 얼굴은 평온하고 거의 젊어진 것처럼 보였다.
'He is finally at peace,' Cathy said softly.
"그는 마침내 편안해졌군요." 캐시가 조용히 말했다.
Mrs. Dean nodded. 'All his life, he wanted revenge. But in the end, he only wanted to be with Catherine.'
딘 부인은 고개를 끄덕였다. "평생 동안 그는 복수를 원했습니다. 하지만 마지막에는 그저 캐서린과 함께 있고 싶었을 뿐입니다."
Hareton felt a strange emotion. He could not mourn the man who had treated him so cruelly, but he could not hate him either. He was just glad that the suffering was over.
헤어턴은 묘한 감정을 느꼈다. 그는 자신을 그토록 잔인하게 대했던 남자를 애도할 수는 없었지만 그를 미워할 수도 없었다. 그는 단지 고통이 끝난 것을 기뻐했다.
The next day, they buried Heathcliff next to Catherine, on the windy hill overlooking the moors. Some people in the village whispered that they had seen the ghosts of Heathcliff and Catherine walking together on the moors, but Mrs. Dean did not believe this. She knew that Heathcliff had found his peace, not with Catherine's ghost, but in letting go of his hatred.
다음 날 그들은 무어가 내려다보이는 바람 부는 언덕에 캐서린의 옆에 히스클리프를 묻었다. 마을 사람들 중에는 히스클리프와 캐서린의 유령이 함께 무어를 걷는 것을 보았다고 말하는 사람도 있었지만, 딘 부인은 이것을 믿지 않았다. 그녀는 히스클리프가 캐서린의 유령과 함께가 아니라 증오를 놓아버림으로써 안식을 찾았다는 것을 알고 있었다.
