When Linton was twelve years old, his mother Isabella died. Before her death, she wrote to Edgar, asking him to take care of her son. Edgar agreed, even though Linton was Heathcliff's child and he hated the man.
린턴이 12살 때 어머니 이사벨라가 죽었다. 죽기 전에 그녀는 에드거에게 편지를 써서 아들을 돌봐달라고 부탁했다. 린턴은 히스클리프의 아이였고 에드거는 그 남자를 증오했음에도 불구하고 그는 동의했다.
Linton arrived at Thrushcross Grange. He was pale, thin, and weak, with a constant cough. He was also selfish and whining, complaining about everything and treating the servants badly. Cathy tried to be kind to him, but she found him annoying and difficult.

A few days later, Heathcliff came to claim his son. He had the right to take Linton, according to the law. Edgar could not refuse, though it broke his heart to let the boy go.
며칠 후 히스클리프가 아들을 데리러 왔다. 법에 따르면 그에게는 린턴을 데려갈 권리가 있었다. 에드거는 소년을 보내는 것에 가슴 아파하면서도 거절할 수 없었다.
Linton was taken to Wuthering Heights, where he was treated coldly by his father. Heathcliff despised the boy's weakness and illness. He did not love him; he only wanted to use him to inherit Thrushcross Grange.
린턴은 폭풍의 언덕으로 끌려갔고, 그곳에서 아버지로부터 차가운 대우를 받았다. 히스클리프는 소년의 나약함과 병을 경멸했다. 그는 아들을 사랑하지 않았다. 단지 드러시크로스 그레인지를 상속받기 위해 그를 이용하고 싶을 뿐이었다.
At Wuthering Heights, Linton met Hareton. The two boys could not have been more different. Hareton was strong and worked hard, while Linton was weak and lazy. Linton looked down on Hareton because he could not read, but Hareton was ashamed of his ignorance and tried to learn to read secretly.
폭풍의 언덕에서 린턴은 헤어턴을 만났다. 두 소년은 이보다 더 다를 수 없었다. 헤어턴은 강하고 부지런했지만 린턴은 약하고 게을렀다. 린턴은 헤어턴이 글을 읽지 못한다는 이유로 그를 깔봤지만, 헤어턴은 자신의 무지를 부끄러워하며 몰래 읽는 법을 배우려 했다.
Heathcliff forbade Hareton from going to school and mocked him when he tried to read. He wanted Hareton to remain ignorant and poor, so that the boy would never be a threat.
히스클리프는 헤어턴이 학교에 가는 것을 금지했고, 그가 읽으려고 하면 조롱했다. 그는 헤어턴이 무지하고 가난한 채로 있기를 원했고, 그렇게 함으로써 소년이 결코 위협이 되지 않도록 하고 싶었다.
Meanwhile, Cathy missed Linton, though she had not liked him much. She wrote to him, and they began to correspond. Heathcliff discovered this and was pleased. He encouraged the relationship, hoping it would lead to marriage.
그동안 캐시는 별로 좋아하지는 않았지만 린턴을 그리워했다. 그녀는 그에게 편지를 썼고 두 사람은 편지를 주고받기 시작했다. 히스클리프는 이것을 발견하고 기뻐했다. 그는 그 관계를 장려했고 그것이 결혼으로 이어지기를 바랐다.
Edgar became very ill. He was weak and old, and his doctors feared he would not live much longer. Cathy was worried about her father and spent all her time caring for him. She did not realize that Heathcliff was planning to use her father's illness to force her to marry Linton.
에드거는 중병에 걸렸다. 그는 약하고 늙었으며 의사들은 그가 더 이상 오래 살지 못할 것이라고 두려워했다. 캐시는 아버지를 걱정하며 모든 시간을 그의 간호에 쏟았다. 그녀는 히스클리프가 아버지의 병을 이용하여 자신에게 린턴과의 결혼을 강요하려 한다는 사실을 깨닫지 못하고 있었다.
