The tension between Heathcliff and Edgar became too much for Catherine. She fell ill, and her condition grew worse each day. She became delirious, talking about her childhood and her love for Heathcliff.
히스클리프와 에드거 사이의 긴장은 캐서린에게 너무나 큰 것이었다. 그녀는 병이 들었고, 상태는 날이 갈수록 악화되었다. 그녀는 헛소리를 하며 어린 시절과 히스클리프에 대한 사랑에 대해 이야기하기 시작했다.
Heathcliff visited her often, hiding in the garden so that Edgar would not see him. Catherine begged to see him, and one night, he climbed through her window.
히스클리프는 자주 그녀를 찾아왔고, 에드거에게 들키지 않도록 정원에 숨어 있었다. 캐서린은 그를 보고 싶다고 애원했고, 어느 날 밤 그는 그녀의 창문으로 기어 올라갔다.
When Heathcliff entered the room, Catherine was weak and pale. She reached out to him, her eyes full of tears.
히스클리프가 방에 들어갔을 때, 캐서린은 약하고 창백했다. 그녀는 눈에 눈물을 머금고 그에게 손을 뻗었다.
'You have killed me,' she whispered. 'You and Edgar have killed me.'
"당신이 나를 죽인 거야." 그녀는 속삭였다. "당신과 에드거가 나를 죽인 거야."
Heathcliff fell to his knees beside her bed. 'What can I do to save you, Cathy? Ask anything, and I will do it.'
히스클리프는 그녀의 침대 곁에 무릎을 꿇었다. "캐시, 당신을 구하기 위해 내가 뭘 할 수 있겠어? 뭐든지 말만 해, 뭐든지 할 테니까."
'Take care of yourself, Heathcliff,' she said. 'If I die, I will haunt you until you die too.'
"자신을 잘 돌봐요, 히스클리프." 그녀가 말했다. "만약 내가 죽으면, 당신이 죽을 때까지 당신을 저주할 거야."
The next day, Catherine gave birth to a daughter and then passed away. Heathcliff was heartbroken. He cursed both Catherine and Edgar, wishing that Catherine's soul would never find peace.
다음 날, 캐서린은 딸을 낳고 나서 죽었다. 히스클리프는 비통에 잠겼다. 그는 캐서린과 에드거 모두를 저주하며, 캐서린의 영혼이 결코 안식을 얻지 못하기를 빌었다.
For weeks, Heathcliff went to her grave every night, praying for her ghost to appear. But Catherine did not come to him. He was left alone with his grief and his anger.
몇 주 동안 히스클리프는 매일 밤 그녀의 무덤에 가서 그녀의 유령이 나타나기를 기도했다. 하지만 캐서린은 그에게 오지 않았다. 그는 슬픔과 분노 속에 홀로 남겨졌다.
Edgar was also devastated. He buried Catherine in the churchyard, near the moors she had loved. He changed completely after her death, becoming even more gentle and kind, but also very sad.
에드거 또한 충격을 받았다. 그는 그녀가 사랑했던 무어 근처의 교회 묘지에 캐서린을 묻었다. 그는 그녀가 죽은 후 완전히 변했고, 더욱 부드럽고 친절해졌지만 동시에 매우 슬퍼 보였다.
Mrs. Dean took care of Catherine's baby, named Cathy after her mother. The child was beautiful and healthy, and everyone hoped she would grow up to be like her grandmother, kind and gentle, rather than like her passionate, wild mother.
딘 부인은 어머니의 이름을 따서 캐시라고 지어진 캐서린의 아기를 돌보았다. 아이는 아름답고 건강했으며, 모두가 그녀가 열정적이고 야생적인 어머니를 닮는 대신 할머니처럼 친절하고 상냥한 아이로 자라기를 바랐다.
Heathcliff returned to Wuthering Heights and began to plan his revenge in earnest. He owned the house now, thanks to Hindley's gambling debts, and he had complete control over Hindley's son, Hareton. He would destroy the Lintons and the Earnshaws, and he would make them suffer as he had suffered.
히스클리프는 폭풍의 언덕으로 돌아와 본격적으로 복수 계획을 세우기 시작했다. 힌들리의 도박 빚 덕분에 이제 그가 집의 소유주였고, 힌들리의 아들 헤어턴을 완전히 지배하고 있었다. 그는 린턴 가문과 언쇼 가문을 파괴하고, 자신이 고통받았던 것처럼 그들을 고통받게 할 작정이었다.
