Chapter 7: The Dragon Boat Festival
제7장: 단오절
The Dragon Boat Festival arrived, and the city of Hangzhou was alive with excitement. The sound of drums echoed from the lake as colorful boats raced across the water. Traditionally, this was a time to drink realgar wine, which was believed to ward off evil spirits and poisonous creatures.
단오절이 다가왔고, 항저우 시내는 흥분으로 활기가 넘쳤습니다. 호수에서는 북소리가 울려 퍼지는 가운데 화려한 배들이 물살을 가르며 경주를 벌였습니다. 전통적으로 이날은 악령과 독 있는 생물들을 쫓아낸다고 믿어지는 웅황주를 마시는 날이었습니다.
Bai Suzhen was aware of the dangers of realgar. "Xiaoqing," she whispered as they prepared for the day. "We must be careful today. The realgar is dangerous for us. We should avoid the wine at all costs."
백소정은 웅황의 위험성을 알고 있었습니다. "소청," 그녀는 하루를 준비하며 속삭였습니다. "오늘 조심해야 해. 웅황은 우리에게 위험해. 무슨 일이 있어도 술은 피해야 해."
However, Xu Xian, still troubled by Fahai's words, had prepared a special bottle of wine. He wanted to prove the monk wrong, yet a part of him needed to know the truth. "Suzhen, my love," he said, handing her a small cup. "Let us share a drink to celebrate our first festival together as husband and wife. It is tradition, after all."
하지만 법해의 말에 여전히 마음이 쓰였던 허선은 특별한 술 한 병을 준비했습니다. 그는 승려가 틀렸음을 증명하고 싶었지만, 한편으로는 진실을 알고 싶었습니다. "소정, 내 사랑," 그가 작은 잔을 건네며 말했습니다. "우리가 부부로서 처음 맞는 명절을 축하하며 한잔합시다. 전통이잖아요."
Bai Suzhen hesitated. "I am not feeling very well today, Xian. Perhaps I should skip the wine."
백소정은 주저했습니다. "오늘 몸이 별로 좋지 않아요, 여보. 술은 안 마시는 게 좋겠어요."
Xu Xian's face fell. "But it is just one small cup. Please, for me."
허선의 얼굴이 실망으로 어두워졌습니다. "하지만 딱 한 잔이잖아요. 제발, 나를 위해서요."
Seeing the disappointment in his eyes, Bai Suzhen couldn't bring herself to refuse. She used her magic to try and neutralize the wine, but she was pregnant and her powers were weakened. As she swallowed the wine, she felt a sudden, sharp pain.
그의 눈에 어린 실망감을 보고, 백소정은 차마 거절할 수 없었습니다. 그녀는 마법으로 술을 중화시키려 했지만, 임신 중이라 힘이 약해져 있었습니다. 술을 삼키자마자, 그녀는 갑작스럽고 날카로운 고통을 느꼈습니다.
"I... I must rest," she gasped, stumbling toward their bedroom.
"나... 좀 쉬어야겠어요," 그녀는 침실로 비틀거리며 가면서 숨을 헐떡였습니다.
Xu Xian followed her, his heart racing. "Suzhen? Are you alright?" He opened the curtains of their bed and let out a blood-curdling scream. There, lying among the silk covers, was a massive white snake. The shock was too much for his heart to bear, and Xu Xian collapsed to the floor, dead.
허선은 심장이 쿵쿵 뛰는 것을 느끼며 그녀를 따라갔습니다. "소정? 괜찮아요?" 그는 침대 커튼을 젖히고는 피가 얼어붙는 듯한 비명을 질렀습니다. 비단 이불 속에는 거대한 백사 한 마리가 누워 있었습니다. 그 충격은 심장이 감당하기에는 너무 컸고, 허선은 바닥에 쓰러져 죽고 말았습니다.
When the effects of the wine wore off, Bai Suzhen returned to her human form. She saw her husband lying motionless and realized what had happened. "No! Xu Xian!" she cried, her voice filled with agony. "What have I done?" Xiaoqing rushed into the room, horrified by the scene. They had lost everything in a single moment of weakness and doubt.
술기운이 가시자, 백소정은 다시 인간의 모습으로 돌아왔습니다. 그녀는 꼼짝도 하지 않는 남편을 보고 무슨 일이 일어났는지 깨달았습니다. "안 돼! 여보!" 그녀는 고통에 찬 목소리로 울부짖었습니다. "내가 무슨 짓을 한 거지?" 소청이 방으로 뛰어들어와 그 광경을 보고 경악했습니다. 한순간의 나약함과 의심으로 인해 그들은 모든 것을 잃었습니다.
