Chapter 9: Xu Xian's Doubt
第九章：許仙の疑い
Although Xu Xian was alive, the peace of their home was gone. Every time he looked at Bai Suzhen, he saw the image of the giant white snake. He became quiet and withdrawn, unable to trust his own senses. Bai Suzhen tried to comfort him, but her presence only seemed to increase his fear.
許仙は生きていましたが、彼らの家庭の平和は失われていました。白素貞を見るたびに、彼は巨大な白蛇のイメージを見ました。彼は無口で引きこもりがちになり、自分の感覚を信じられなくなりました。白素貞は彼を慰めようとしましたが、彼女の存在は彼の恐怖を増大させるだけのように見えました。
"Is something wrong, my husband?" she asked one evening, placing a hand on his shoulder. "You have been so distant since you recovered."
「何か悪いことでもあったの、あなた？」とある晩、彼女は彼の方に手を置いて尋ねました。「回復してからずっとよそよそしいわ」
Xu Xian flinched at her touch. "I... I saw something during the festival, Suzhen. A monster. It was in our bed."
許仙は彼女の接触に身をすくめました。「僕は…祭りの間に何かを見たんだ、素貞。怪物を。僕たちのベッドにいたんだ」
Bai Suzhen's heart sank. "It was just a hallucination caused by the wine, Xian. You were very ill. Please, do not let a dream ruin what we have."
白素貞の心は沈みました。「それはワインによる幻覚よ、あなた。あなたはとても具合が悪かったの。お願い、夢に私たちの関係を壊させないで」
But Xu Xian could not forget. He began to spend more time away from home, seeking solace in the local temples. One day, he found himself back at Jinshan Temple, where Fahai was waiting for him.

"You have seen the truth now, haven't you?" Fahai said, his voice full of knowing. "The spirit saved you only to keep you in her power. As long as you stay with her, your soul is in danger."

"What should I do?" Xu Xian asked, his voice breaking. "I love her, but I am terrified."

"Stay here in the temple," Fahai suggested. "The sacred walls will protect you. If she truly loves you, she will let you go. If not, she will show her true nature."
「ここ寺院に留まりなさい」と法海は提案しました。「聖なる壁がお前を守るだろう。もし彼女が本当に愛しているなら、お前を行かせるはずだ。そうでなければ、彼女は本性を現すだろう」
Xu Xian agreed to stay, hoping to find peace and clarity. But his absence only fueled Bai Suzhen's desperation. She knew that Fahai was behind his decision, and she was determined to get her husband back, no matter the cost. The conflict between the spirit and the monk was about to reach a breaking point, and the city of Hangzhou would soon feel the weight of their battle.
許仙は平和と明晰さを見つけることを期待して、留まることに同意しました。しかし、彼の不在は白素貞の絶望を煽るだけでした。彼女は法海が彼の決定の背後にいることを知っており、どんな犠牲を払っても夫を取り戻す決意をしていました。精霊と僧侶の対立は限界点に達しようとしており、杭州の街はまもなく彼らの戦いの重みを感じることになるのでした。
