Chapter 4: The Sufferings of the Common People
第4章：民衆の苦しみ
During his journey, Lao Can saw the sufferings of countless common people. They lived in poverty and hardship, yet no one paid attention to them. This situation made Lao Can feel heartache.
旅の間、老残は無数の一般庶民の苦しみを見ました。彼らは貧困と困難の中で生活していましたが、誰も彼らに注意を払いませんでした。この状況は老残を心痛させました。
Many farmers lost their harvests due to natural disasters. The famine compelled them to sell their children and even sell themselves into slavery. Lao Can felt immense sorrow upon seeing these scenes.
多くの農民が自然災害のために収穫を失いました。飢饉は彼らに子供を売ること、さらには自分自身を奴隷として売ることを余儀なくさせました。老残はこれらの光景を見て大きな悲しみを感じました。
Some handicraftsmen also faced dilemmas. The influx of foreign goods caused local handicraftsmen to lose their markets, and many became unemployed as a result. Unable to find work, they could only rely on meager savings to barely maintain their livelihoods.
一部の職人もジレンマに直面しました。外国製品の流入により、地元の職人は市場を失い、その結果、多くの人々が失業しました。仕事を見つけることができず、彼らはわずかな貯金に頼って生計をかろうじて維持することしかできませんでした。
The impoverished people in cities were even more miserable. They had no land and no skills, and could only do the most lowly work. Even so, their income could barely sustain their basic needs, and their lives were exceptionally difficult.
都市の貧困層はさらに悲惨でした。彼らには土地も技術もなく、最も卑しい仕事しかできませんでした。それでも、彼らの収入は基本的なニーズをかろうじて維持できるだけであり、彼らの生活は非常に困難でした。
Lao Can recorded all these situations. He hoped that through these records, later generations would understand the hardships of that era, and also hoped to arouse some people's attention and promote change.
