As spring turned to summer, Heathcliff's condition worsened. He barely ate, and he could not sleep. He spent his nights wandering the moors, searching for Catherine's ghost.
Alors que le printemps se transformait en été, l'état de Heathcliff a empiré. Il mangeait à peine et ne pouvait pas dormir. Il passait ses nuits à errer dans les landes, cherchant le fantôme de Catherine.
He began to see Catherine everywhere. In the wind, he heard her voice. In the shadows, he saw her face. He spoke to her, as if she were standing beside him.
Il a commencé à voir Catherine partout. Dans le vent, il entendait sa voix. Dans les ombres, il voyait son visage. Il lui parlait, comme si elle se tenait à côté de lui.
Mrs. Dean tried to take care of him, but he refused to eat. He told her that he was not hungry, that he only wanted to be with Catherine.
Mme Dean a essayé de prendre soin de lui, mais il a refusé de manger. Il lui a dit qu'il n'avait pas faim, qu'il voulait seulement être avec Catherine.
One night, he did not return to the house at all. Mrs. Dean and Cathy searched for him everywhere, but they could not find him. The next morning, he returned, pale and exhausted.
Une nuit, il n'est pas rentré à la maison du tout. Mme Dean et Cathy l'ont cherché partout, mais elles n'ont pas pu le trouver. Le lendemain matin, il est revenu, pâle et épuisé.
'I saw her,' he said, his eyes shining with madness. 'She was waiting for me by the old grave.'
'Je l'ai vue', a-t-il dit, les yeux brillant de folie. 'Elle m'attendait près de la vieille tombe.'
Mrs. Dean was worried. Heathcliff was not well. His mind was breaking under the weight of his grief and guilt.
Mme Dean était inquiète. Heathcliff n'allait pas bien. Son esprit se brisait sous le poids de son chagrin et de sa culpabilité.
Cathy watched him with a mixture of fear and pity. She had grown up hearing stories about the evil Heathcliff, but now she saw a broken, suffering man. She began to understand that his cruelty had come from his own pain and his inability to let go of the past.
Cathy le regardait avec un mélange de peur et de pitié. Elle avait grandi en entendant des histoires sur le méchant Heathcliff, mais maintenant elle voyait un homme brisé et souffrant. Elle a commencé à comprendre que sa cruauté venait de sa propre douleur et de son incapacité à lâcher le passé.
Hareton, too, felt sorry for Heathcliff. Despite everything Heathcliff had done to him, Hareton could not hate the old man completely. He saw that Heathcliff was tormented by his memories of Catherine.
Hareton, aussi, avait pitié de Heathcliff. Malgré tout ce que Heathcliff lui avait fait, Hareton ne pouvait pas détester le vieil homme complètement. Il voyait que Heathcliff était tourmenté par ses souvenirs de Catherine.
As the summer passed, Heathcliff became weaker and weaker. He could no longer work in the fields or manage the estate. Cathy and Hareton took over the work, running Wuthering Heights together.
À mesure que l'été passait, Heathcliff devenait de plus en plus faible. Il ne pouvait plus travailler dans les champs ni gérer le domaine. Cathy et Hareton ont pris le relais, gérant Wuthering Heights ensemble.
Heathcliff spent his days in his room, staring out the window at the moors. He spoke of nothing but Catherine, and he refused to see anyone except Mrs. Dean.
Heathcliff passait ses journées dans sa chambre, regardant par la fenêtre vers les landes. Il ne parlait de rien d'autre que de Catherine, et il refusait de voir qui que ce soit sauf Mme Dean.
Mrs. Dean knew that the end was near. She prayed that Heathcliff would find peace before he died.
Mme Dean savait que la fin était proche. Elle priait pour que Heathcliff trouve la paix avant de mourir.
