The tension between Heathcliff and Edgar became too much for Catherine. She fell ill, and her condition grew worse each day. She became delirious, talking about her childhood and her love for Heathcliff.
La tension entre Heathcliff et Edgar est devenue trop forte pour Catherine. Elle est tombée malade, et son état s'aggravait chaque jour. Elle est devenue délirante, parlant de son enfance et de son amour pour Heathcliff.
Heathcliff visited her often, hiding in the garden so that Edgar would not see him. Catherine begged to see him, and one night, he climbed through her window.
Heathcliff lui rendait visite souvent, se cachant dans le jardin pour qu'Edgar ne le voie pas. Catherine suppliait de le voir, et une nuit, il a grimpé par sa fenêtre.
When Heathcliff entered the room, Catherine was weak and pale. She reached out to him, her eyes full of tears.
Quand Heathcliff est entré dans la chambre, Catherine était faible et pâle. Elle a tendu la main vers lui, les yeux pleins de larmes.
'You have killed me,' she whispered. 'You and Edgar have killed me.'
'Tu m'as tuée', a-t-elle chuchoté. 'Toi et Edgar m'avez tuée.'
Heathcliff fell to his knees beside her bed. 'What can I do to save you, Cathy? Ask anything, and I will do it.'
Heathcliff est tombé à genoux près de son lit. 'Que puis-je faire pour te sauver, Cathy ? Demande n'importe quoi, et je le ferai.'
'Take care of yourself, Heathcliff,' she said. 'If I die, I will haunt you until you die too.'
'Prends soin de toi, Heathcliff', a-t-elle dit. 'Si je meurs, je te hanterai jusqu'à ce que tu meures aussi.'
The next day, Catherine gave birth to a daughter and then passed away. Heathcliff was heartbroken. He cursed both Catherine and Edgar, wishing that Catherine's soul would never find peace.
Le lendemain, Catherine a donné naissance à une fille puis est décédée. Heathcliff avait le cœur brisé. Il a maudit à la fois Catherine et Edgar, souhaitant que l'âme de Catherine ne trouve jamais la paix.
For weeks, Heathcliff went to her grave every night, praying for her ghost to appear. But Catherine did not come to him. He was left alone with his grief and his anger.
Pendant des semaines, Heathcliff est allé sur sa tombe chaque nuit, priant pour que son fantôme apparaisse. Mais Catherine n'est pas venue à lui. Il est resté seul avec son chagrin et sa colère.
Edgar was also devastated. He buried Catherine in the churchyard, near the moors she had loved. He changed completely after her death, becoming even more gentle and kind, but also very sad.
Edgar était également dévasté. Il a enterré Catherine dans le cimetière, près des landes qu'elle avait aimées. Il a complètement changé après sa mort, devenant encore plus doux et gentil, mais aussi très triste.
Mrs. Dean took care of Catherine's baby, named Cathy after her mother. The child was beautiful and healthy, and everyone hoped she would grow up to be like her grandmother, kind and gentle, rather than like her passionate, wild mother.
Mme Dean a pris soin du bébé de Catherine, nommé Cathy comme sa mère. L'enfant était belle et en bonne santé, et tout le monde espérait qu'elle grandirait pour être comme sa grand-mère, gentille et douce, plutôt que comme sa mère passionnée et sauvage.
Heathcliff returned to Wuthering Heights and began to plan his revenge in earnest. He owned the house now, thanks to Hindley's gambling debts, and he had complete control over Hindley's son, Hareton. He would destroy the Lintons and the Earnshaws, and he would make them suffer as he had suffered.
Heathcliff est retourné à Wuthering Heights et a commencé à planifier sa vengeance sérieusement. Il possédait maintenant la maison, grâce aux dettes de jeu de Hindley, et il avait un contrôle total sur le fils de Hindley, Hareton. Il détruirait les Linton et les Earnshaw, et il les ferait souffrir comme il avait souffert.
