The next morning, the housekeeper, Mrs. Dean, told me the story of Heathcliff and the strange ghost I had seen.
Le lendemain matin, la gouvernante, Mme Dean, m'a raconté l'histoire de Heathcliff et de l'étrange fantôme que j'avais vu.
Thirty years ago, Mr. Earnshaw, the owner of Wuthering Heights, went to Liverpool on business. When he returned, he brought with him a dirty, homeless boy. He had found the child in the streets, starving and alone. Mr. Earnshaw named the boy Heathcliff, after a son who had died.
Il y a trente ans, M. Earnshaw, le propriétaire de Wuthering Heights, est allé à Liverpool pour affaires. À son retour, il a ramené avec lui un garçon sale et sans abri. Il avait trouvé l'enfant dans les rues, affamé et seul. M. Earnshaw a nommé le garçon Heathcliff, d'après un fils qui était mort.
At first, Mrs. Earnshaw and her children did not like the strange boy. The daughter, Catherine, and her brother Hindley were angry that their father had brought this gypsy child home. But Catherine soon became fond of Heathcliff, and the two children became inseparable.
Au début, Mme Earnshaw et ses enfants n'aimaient pas l'étrange garçon. La fille, Catherine, et son frère Hindley étaient en colère que leur père ait ramené cet enfant gitan à la maison. Mais Catherine s'est bientôt attachée à Heathcliff, et les deux enfants sont devenus inséparables.
Heathcliff was proud, silent, and stubborn, but he loved Catherine deeply. Hindley, however, hated him. He saw Heathcliff as a rival for his father's love and for his inheritance.
Heathcliff était fier, silencieux et têtu, mais il aimait profondément Catherine. Hindley, cependant, le haïssait. Il voyait Heathcliff comme un rival pour l'amour de son père et pour son héritage.
When Mr. Earnshaw died, Hindley became the master of Wuthering Heights. He treated Heathcliff badly, making him work as a servant in the fields and denying him an education. Catherine tried to comfort Heathcliff, but she was sent away to study at a nearby house.
À la mort de M. Earnshaw, Hindley est devenu le maître de Wuthering Heights. Il a mal traité Heathcliff, le faisant travailler comme serviteur dans les champs et lui refusant une éducation. Catherine a essayé de réconforter Heathcliff, mais elle a été envoyée étudier dans une maison voisine.
Heathcliff grew bitter and angry. He promised himself that one day he would have his revenge on Hindley. But he never stopped loving Catherine. Their love was wild and passionate, like the windy moors around them.
Heathcliff est devenu amer et en colère. Il s'est promis qu'un jour il se vengerait de Hindley. Mais il n'a jamais cessé d'aimer Catherine. Leur amour était sauvage et passionné, comme les landes venteuses autour d'eux.
One day, Catherine and Heathcliff ran away to the moors together, pretending to be ghosts and spirits. They found a world of freedom there, away from the rules and restrictions of Wuthering Heights. But this happiness was not to last. Fate had other plans for them.
Un jour, Catherine et Heathcliff se sont enfuis ensemble dans les landes, prétendant être des fantômes et des esprits. Ils y ont trouvé un monde de liberté, loin des règles et des restrictions de Wuthering Heights. Mais ce bonheur ne devait pas durer. Le destin avait d'autres plans pour eux.
As they grew older, Catherine met Edgar Linton, a wealthy gentleman from Thrushcross Grange. Edgar was kind and gentle, but he could not understand Catherine's wild spirit. Yet Catherine was drawn to him, for he offered her a life of comfort and safety.
En grandissant, Catherine a rencontré Edgar Linton, un riche gentleman de Thrushcross Grange. Edgar était gentil et doux, mais il ne pouvait pas comprendre l'esprit sauvage de Catherine. Pourtant, Catherine était attirée par lui, car il lui offrait une vie de confort et de sécurité.
Heathcliff watched with jealousy and pain. He felt that Catherine was slipping away from him. One night, when Catherine told him that she intended to marry Edgar, Heathcliff disappeared into the dark night, never to return to Wuthering Heights for three long years.
Heathcliff regardait avec jalousie et douleur. Il sentait que Catherine lui échappait. Une nuit, quand Catherine lui a dit qu'elle avait l'intention d'épouser Edgar, Heathcliff a disparu dans la nuit sombre, pour ne pas revenir à Wuthering Heights pendant trois longues années.
Mrs. Dean finished her story and looked at me. 'And that, Mr. Lockwood, is why the ghost of Catherine still haunts this house. She died young, but her love for Heathcliff was so strong that her spirit cannot rest.'
Mme Dean a terminé son histoire et m'a regardé. 'Et c'est pourquoi, M. Lockwood, le fantôme de Catherine hante toujours cette maison. Elle est morte jeune, mais son amour pour Heathcliff était si fort que son esprit ne peut pas reposer.'
