Chapter 3: The Whale Ship
Chapitre 3 : Le Navire Baleinier
Next morning, I went to the harbor to look for a ship. After walking along the docks, I saw a magnificent vessel tied to the pier. It was the Pequod, a whaling ship that was preparing for a long voyage.
Le lendemain matin, je suis allé au port pour chercher un navire. Après avoir marché le long des quais, j'ai vu un magnifique vaisseau amarré à la jetée. C'était le Pequod, un navire baleinier qui se préparait pour un long voyage.
The ship was old but strong, built for the dangerous work of hunting whales. Men were loading supplies, fixing sails, and preparing for the journey. I could smell the salt in the air and hear the calls of sailors working.
Le navire était vieux mais solide, construit pour le travail dangereux de la chasse à la baleine. Les hommes chargeaient des provisions, réparaient les voiles et se préparaient pour le voyage. Je pouvais sentir le sel dans l'air et entendre les appels des marins au travail.
I asked the captain of the Pequod for a job. Captain Ahab was a serious man with a white mark on his face, where a whale had once taken his leg. He looked at me carefully and then nodded, accepting me as part of his crew.
J'ai demandé du travail au capitaine du Pequod. Le capitaine Achab était un homme sérieux avec une marque blanche sur le visage, là où une baleine lui avait pris la jambe. Il m'a regardé attentivement puis a hoché la tête, m'acceptant comme membre de son équipage.
