Chapitre 15 : Le chagrin de Charles
After Emma's death, Charles became a broken man. He wandered through their empty house, touching Emma's things and crying. Every object reminded him of his beloved wife, and he could not bear the pain of her absence.

Charles discovered Emma's love letters from both Rodolphe and Leon. When he read them, he finally understood the truth about her affairs and the reasons for her death. Instead of being angry, he felt only pity and forgiveness for Emma.

Charles found Rodolphe and Leon, wanting to tell them that he held no grudge. Both men were ashamed and guilty when they saw Charles, realizing the pain they had caused an innocent man. The meetings were awkward and uncomfortable for everyone.
Charles trouva Rodolphe et Léon, voulant leur dire qu'il ne leur en voulait pas. Les deux hommes eurent honte et se sentirent coupables quand ils virent Charles, réalisant la douleur qu'ils avaient causée à un homme innocent. Les rencontres furent gênantes et inconfortables pour tout le monde.
The discovery of Emma's secrets did not lessen Charles's grief. He still loved her and missed her terribly. His life had lost all meaning without Emma, and he existed only as a shadow of his former self.
La découverte des secrets d'Emma n'atténua pas le chagrin de Charles. Il l'aimait toujours et elle lui manquait terriblement. Sa vie avait perdu tout sens sans Emma, et il n'existait plus que comme une ombre de son ancien moi.
