After the confrontation at the Plaza Hotel, Gatsby and Daisy drove home together in Gatsby's yellow car. Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress, saw the car approaching and ran into the road, believing it was Tom returning to her. Gatsby, who was driving, could not stop in time and struck Myrtle, killing her instantly.

He recognized Myrtle's body and realized that his affair with her had led to this tragic outcome. Despite knowing that Gatsby was driving, Tom told George Wilson that Gatsby was responsible, hoping to eliminate his rival.
