Tom Buchanan became suspicious of Gatsby's relationship with Daisy and confronted him at the Plaza Hotel. In a tense scene, Tom exposed Gatsby's true identity: James Gatz, the son of poor farmers from North Dakota who had abandoned his family and reinvented himself through illegal bootlegging operations.

Gatsby denied Tom's accusations, insisting that Daisy had never loved Tom and that she was going to leave him. Daisy, caught between the two men, was unable to make a definitive choice, revealing the weakness of her character and her inability to commit fully to either man.
