What is a Conjunction?

Conjunctions are connecting words. They join words, phrases, or clauses. The three main types are coordinating, subordinating, and correlative conjunctions.

Types of Conjunctions

Coordinating Conjunction

Connect equal elements. Remember FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.

I like tea and coffee.

She is smart but lazy.

Study hard, or you will fail.

Subordinating Conjunction

Introduce dependent clauses: because, although, if, when, while, since, unless, until.

I stayed home because it was raining.

Although he was tired, he kept working.

Because she had no sisters or brothers, she often felt lonely.

Correlative Conjunction

Work in pairs: either...or, neither...nor, both...and, not only...but also, whether...or.

Both Tom and Jerry like cheese.

Neither John nor Mary could attend.
