Emma's debts became so large that Lheureux decided to sue her to recover his money. The court ordered that all of Emma's possessions be sold at auction to pay her creditors. Emma was terrified that Charles would discover her secret.
The news of the auction spread through Yonville, and people began to gossip about Emma's financial troubles. Homais, the pharmacist, pretended to be shocked, but he enjoyed the scandal and the opportunity to talk about Emma's problems.
On the day of the auction, all of Emma's beautiful things were sold—her furniture, her clothes, her jewelry, even the curtains from her windows. Charles noticed that many items were missing from their home, but Emma lied and said they were being cleaned.
