Chapter 9: Nick's Disillusionment
Nick's experience with Gatsby and the Buchanans left him deeply disillusioned with American society and the pursuit of wealth. He realized that the moral decay and emptiness of the wealthy class extended far beyond the characters he had known, representing a fundamental flaw in the American Dream itself.
Tom and Daisy were careless people who smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made. Their privilege and wealth insulated them from the consequences of their actions.
Nick decided to return to the Midwest, seeking the authenticity and values that seemed to have been lost in the corruption of the East Coast. His departure represented a rejection of the hollow American Dream that had destroyed Gatsby and a search for a more meaningful life.
